What are the different room classes?

Journal ranks rooms by classes based on overall view and outlook.

Depending on the room type, Journal offers three classes for students to choose from. Classes with a superior outlook attract an additional fee on top of the base weekly room rate.

Three-Bedroom Apartment Room Classes:

Regular: Rooms located with a courtyard or restricted lower level view

View: Rooms located with an extended view across the surrounding area, the city, or the university precinct.

Premium View: Rooms located on upper levels with multiple windows all with extended views.

What size is the bed?

The Three-Bedroom Ensuite Apartment has double bed, dimensions 137cm wide and 188cm long.

How are the bedrooms accessed?

Each bedroom has its own lockable door.

Does the Three-Bedroom Ensuite Apartment have an openable window?

Each bedroom has at least one large openable window. Premium View (and some View) rooms have multiple windows. Shared living areas all have openable windows.

Can you control the air conditioning?

The air conditioning can be controlled in-room within a range appropriate for the season.

What storage does the room have?

Each bed is fitted with an easy-lifting mechanism which provides large storage for big items like luggage, boxes and other oversized items.

The bedrooms are fitted with their own built-in robe, drawers and shelf. The kitchen has lots of cupboards and drawers for food storage as well.

Does the apartment come with appliances?

Yes, the shared apartments are provided with a kettle, toaster and vacuum cleaner.

Are all the Three-Bedroom Ensuite Apartment rooms identical?

Room features and sizes vary slightly based on the position in the building. Images are indicative of room types and features.

Can I change my move in or move out date so they align exactly to my studies and travel plans or are these dates set?

The lease start and end dates are set and are aligned to the university calendar as best as possible considering all universities and colleges intake dates.

Move-in Date: If you need to arrive earlier or later than your original booking date, please contact our team as soon as possible to check availability. Additional charges may apply for early arrivals.

Move-out Date: If you need to extend your stay beyond your original lease end date, let us know in advance so we can explore options for you. Extensions are subject to availability and additional costs.

What lease length do you offer?

We offer Semester (equivalent to a half full calendar year) or Full Year lease (equivalent to a full calendar year), depending on your preference.

What is the 6-month lease surcharge?

There is an extra $40 rent per week if you choose a Semester lease as opposed to a Full Year lease.

What’s included in the rent?

We are an all-inclusive property; your rent includes all utilities, unlimited high-speed internet, full access to common areas and participation in our famous events and activities program, Journal Life.

What is included in my room?

Your room will be fully furnished, including essential kitchen appliances and furniture. However, you will need to bring your own utensils, kitchenware, and bedding. Alternatively, you can purchase our kitchen and linen pack, which will be ready for you upon arrival. These items can be purchased via our resident portal, once your booking is completed.

Can I choose my exact room?

If you have any specific requests regarding room number, floor, or orientation, please let us know when you make the booking. We will try our best to accommodate your request.

Can I have guests stay over?

Yes, it’s your home so you can have guests staying over occasionally. All overnight guests should only stay in your own room. We would ask you to respect your fellow residents and let your flatmates know as well as sign in your guest at reception.  You are responsible for the behaviour of any guests you bring to Journal. The Journal Portal provides more information.

Can I move in later than my start date?

Yes, you can move in later than your start date. Please notify us of your new arrival date. Please note, you are still obliged to pay the rent from the contract start date, even if you arrive late.

Can I swap my room once booked?

Room moves may be possible, subject to availability. We recommend mentioning any specific requests at the time of booking so we can better accommodate your needs. Please note that room changes may incur administrative and cleaning fees. For further details, please contact reception.

How do I pay rent?

You can set up a direct debit with us, allowing us to take the payment directly from your bank account without any hassle or surcharges. Alternatively, you can pay via the resident portal.

What is your credit card surcharge?

Our credit card surcharge is 1.85%. Most residents pay their rent with direct debit, which does not incur any surcharges.

How often is the rent pay?

The rent is paid once every two weeks.

How much is the bond?

The bond is equivalent to 4 weeks’ rent, and you need to pay the bond before your arrival.

What are the payment options for deposit and bond?

During the booking process, our portal will direct you to a payment page where you will be presented with the payment due dates and amounts. The costs vary depending on the lease length and room type you have chosen.

Are the prices shown per apartment or per person?

The prices shown are per person per week, and they include all utilities and unlimited high-speed internet, full access to all the facilities, common areas and participation in the Journal life program.

Is dual occupancy in a studio allowed?

We consider dual occupancy on a case-by-case basis. Please contact our team to discuss your specific situation, and we will do our best to assist you.

Are pets allowed?

Unfortunately, we do not permit pets including fish, birds, or reptiles. However, we do make exceptions for residents who require the assistance of a trained and registered Service Dog or Assistance Dog.

Can I choose who I live with?

When you make a booking, please specify who you would like to stay with. For apartments, it depends on the room type, but we will do our best to organise for you to be with friends where possible.

Can I sublet my room to someone else?

No. If you find yourself needing to move out for any reason, please contact the property team for advice.

Can I send parcels to the building before moving in?

Yes, you can send parcels to your Journal building before moving in. However, please note that we have limited space, so please inform us beforehand.

Can I move out if I am still in contract?

If you need to leave earlier while still under contract, you will need to find another student to take over your tenancy for the remainder of your contract.
Before you can start setting up a tenancy takeover, please contact our reception team and fill in the required forms. If you are unable to find anyone, you must pay any remaining rent you owe.
Once you find a replacement, we will need some details before we can set up a contract. Until the new tenant completes their booking, makes payment, and collects their keys, you will still be liable for all the fees.

Can I extend my lease if I want to stay longer?

Yes, you can stay for the duration of your studies. We will contact you prior to the end of your existing lease to determine if you would like to renew and for how long.

How secure is the building?

When entering the building there is a turnstile that is only accessible by residents. All door entry points are key fobbed. We have CCTV covering all common areas, our lifts require room key access to enter the levels, and our on-site staff are available at reception or patrolling the building 24 hours a day. Their main focus is to keep residents safe & happy, and the building secure.
